Taking advantage of a ripe real estate market and a frenzy of activity in the BAM Cultural District, the state is preparing to sell the 300,000-square-foot brick and limestone building at 55 Hanson Place that is has owned since 1986. The tenants (including 23 state agencies in addition to a day care center), reportedly have only until the end of April to relocate, a fact that is ruffling some feathers among local pols. Hakeem Jeffries (who has an office in the building) and Tish James have both expressed their strong opposition to the move. It’s easy to see why developers would be excited to get their hands on the building. With a paucity of prewar apartment buildings in the area, demand would surely be strong for the family-size apartment that could easily be carved out of these 20,000-square-foot floorplates. Anyone heard price rumors? $100 million would be a bit over $300 a foot. Doable?
