Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-Astoria) spent his birthday, April 23, talking to constituents.

Highlights from the Hunter’s Point Civic Association meeting include a shout-out to what Gianaris called a “state of the art dog run,” on Vernon Boulevard and 48th Street. He said he is getting calls from other parts of the city about the pooch paradise (see adorable video below).

Schools: Area schools are already overcrowded, and what’s going to happen when the Hunter’s Point Development opens? Gianaris suggests organizing an effort to get the city to address the problem.

Disconnection: Woman feels disconnect in Hunter’s Point between new developments and old residents.

Strip Club: Gypsy Rose Cabaret was denied a liquor license, but it seems to be going ahead with plans to open as a nude restaurant under the name Show Palace. Gianaris said he doesn’t think owners will go forward with such a weak business plan, and if they do, they won’t succeed. The venue is now hiring, according to its website.

Transit: Hunter’s Point subway station is too small, there is a problem with people not fitting on the platform. Gianaris fears the problem will get worse as new residents move in. Someone suggests fixing this with a foot bridge to Manhattan. Gianaris says there is talk of moving the East River ferry terminal. Woman complains sidewalks are bad near the terminal and filled with construction dust

Affordable Housing: Residents debate the meaning and value of affordable housing. One man argues that forcing developers to make things affordable will only lead to lack of supply, which will drive prices up in the long run. Other residents say lack of regulation will lead to a city filled with rich people.

Roosevelt Island: Gianaris said he is in talks to ensure Queens gets its share of the action when Cornell arrives on the island.

Fireworks: Residents miss watching the 4th of July fireworks on the East River. Sigh.
