It started as a farming estate in 1660, owned by Lefferts Pietersen van Haughwout, a Dutch immigrant and the constable of Old Flatbush. In the 19th century, his descendent James Lefferts divided it up into 600 lots for high-end development — what was then called Lefferts Manor. But it wasn’t until 1968 that the neighborhood got its current name: Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

Prospect Lefferts Gardens — a name that refers to its Lefferts heritage as well as its proximity to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden — has had many chapters to its story. Over the years, its charms have attracted upper middle-class homeowners in the early 20th century; Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, and Jews in the mid 20th century; and a wave of Caribbean immigration in the 1980s. Now, with an influx of young New Yorkers looking for affordable space in Brooklyn, the neighborhood is getting a new crop of restaurants, bars, and shops to add to its vibrant Caribbean culture, along with over 2,000 new apartments.

To celebrate the opening of the new Prospect Lefferts Gardens office (at 661 Flatbush Ave) of the Brooklyn real estate firm MySpace NYC, their agents — many of whom live in the neighborhood — present some of the can’t-miss restaurants, bars, and shops that make PLG one of Brooklyn’s most exciting neighborhoods.
