OHNY is this weekend (that’s openhousenewyork) and Queens has plenty to show off

openhousenewyork (OHNY) is once again holding their Open House New York Weekend, where you get to explore cool places and buildings all around the city – some of which are not usually open to the average person (e.g. the gardens of historic Sunnyside Gardens). We’ve got a list of the OHNY spots in Queens and there are some pretty amazing locations/buildings included, like the Ganesh Hindu Temple in Flushing, King Manor Museum in Jamaica, and the Noguchi Museum in LIC. Some of the venues are ticketed ($5), so reserve ahead of time for those. It’s a very cool weekend and worth your time.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the NYT

The Times has a nice article on Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the largest park in Queens. It’s a wonderful open space in the borough, and is beloved by many. The author describes the park like this:

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is a homely beauty, a many-acre stepchild of two World’s Fairs, stepping gingerly between noisy highways and stadiums and a polluted bay. All she possesses are a handsome Unisphere, a Hall of Science, a zoo, an art museum and tens of thousands of immigrant New Yorkers who pour out of the densely packed streets of Corona, Elmhurst, Flushing and Jackson Heights to run across her soccer fields, seek shade under her still-adolescent trees and stroll, bike and roller skate around her lakes.

The park really has a lot going for it and people are passionate about this space, possessing strong opinions about the potential Major League Soccer Stadium that might be built there, as well as additional parking and new tennis courts. Many eyes are now fixated on the park that weren’t there before.

Malu, mmm…! Now they’re making cakes and tarts to go with that crazy good ice cream

Yes, it’s true – Malu now offers baked goods! We were particularly impressed with the chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate ganache that are so wonderfully chocolatey. We’re going to try the pecan tart slices next time. Their ice cream continues to be magical, too.

Rio Market in Astoria gets some love from Serious Eats

Nice to see Rio Market – a great Brazilian food market in Astoria’s “Little Brazil” section of 36th Avenue – get some love from our friends at Serious Eats. And we agree with this:

“Our most popular products are pão de queijo—cheese bread—coffee, and açaí” Ricardo explained. “Really, açaí is our number one product. It was named the number one product in the world by Oprah, so now everybody comes here looking for it!”

We especially love the pão de queijo! If you haven’t had it, it’s worth checking out this tasty treat.

Good news for JetBlue customers at JFK, especially international travelers

Yesterday, JetBlue broke ground for their upcoming international arrivals center at Terminal 5 in JFK. There will be additional gates built, new baggage claim belts installed, and sustainability is on the mind of the designers and those building the place – indoor air quality is addressed as well as the repurposing of concrete instead of dumping it in a landfill. Those in the know expect the center to be open in 2015.
