The Astoria Music Society mixes the golden oldies with fresh new music, performing everything from Mozart to Beethoven to premiering American compositions. Now celebrating its tenth concert season, the group, which includes the Astoria Symphony Orchestra, the Astoria Symphonic Choir and the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble, will fill St. Joseph RC Church today, December 16, with Beethoven’s “Consecration of the House,” Bizet’s “LArlesienne Suite No. 2″ and Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.” The event, Holiday Jubilee! X, will include a traditional holiday sing-along.

The NY Daily News reports that a retired music educator – and long-time Jackson Heights resident – Patricia Glunt is launching the Jackson Heights Orchestra. With more than two-dozen local musicians, Glunt’s vision is to feature “local talent and composers.” Glunt also said “Jackson Heights is growing as a cultural community. The time is right.” (more…)
