We noticed that the Best Western Arena Hotel has recently opened at 1324 Atlantic, at Nostrand. According to this Street Insider press release, there will be 56 rooms with a fitness center, continental breakfast, and free parking. Rates begin at $159.99 per night. While it is very close to the Nostrand Avenue subway stop, the press release also bragged the new building is “Located within walking distance to the Atlantic Terminal,” with the Best Western owner stating, “We are only six blocks from the new [Atlantic Yards] arena.” True, but those are some long blocks!

  1. No more than you, MM. Funny, if this hotel were to go up in Gowanus, you’d rant and rave about how ugly it is. But if it goes up in a blighted area like Crown Heights, suddenly it’s to be revered.

Typical hypocrisy from you, MM, and your boring, droning self.

  2. Ah, Polemicist, to be damned with faint praise, I’m so honored. (sarcasm) I don’t miss your point, I totally agree with ENY, Nabor and 11217, so it isn’t just clueless l’il ol me. This place will do well for all the reason they listed. You must be upset with the government for so many reasons, and here’s another one. A zoning plot to confound hoteliers.

No kidding you can get a cheap hotel room in other cities. So what? We’re talking about NYC,or is someone supposed to get a hotel room in Stanford and commute in to their meeting, or a wedding, just to save a few bucks?

Big Jugs, you remain an idiot.

I like your writings, despite the fact you are completely clueless as to how and why beautiful things were once constructed in this city.

That said, you once again entirely miss my point. The reason Best Western can get away with constructing this crap on a former auto body shop site on the busiest road in Brooklyn is BECAUSE there is a government induced shortage of hotels.

All they have to do is allow hotels to be constructed anywhere in the borough, and voila – it would be as it was prior to the takeover of this city by liberal busybodies. Hotels would once again be constructed where people wish to stay, like Brooklyn Heights or across from the Brooklyn Museum or countless other places suitable for visitors.

$160 a night will get you a room at a freaking Hilton or Marriott in Newark, Stamford, Hartford, New Haven or many other much smaller cities in the area.

  4. Even if they are “long blocks” it certainly is walkable. And the LIRR is one stop away from the Atlantic Terminal, about a 4 – 6 minute ride.

Seeing as the Nostrand LIRR stop is directly en route to and from the Airtrain at JFK (about 15 minutes away), I wouldn’t underestimate the number of travelers who chose this hotel as their destination of choice. Not to mention the proximity to the A/C at Nostrand, and if they are willing to walk a few blocks, the 2,3 and 5 train near Eastern Parkway.

  5. “Who’s going to pay $160 a night to stay there?”

Probably the people who everyone on here said would never stay at any of the Gowanus hotels, but found this place because those are all fully booked every night.
