“It’s completely out of control,” said Phil Caponegro, 51, at last night’s CB1 meeting to discuss mass transit’s failure to keep up with a surging population in northern Brooklyn. “You either have to squeeze in or let the train go by – and that’s in the middle of the day.” In addition to the much-discusses overcrowding of the L train at peak hours, residents are also frustrated that the G train only has four cars. With the population of Williamsburg and Greenpoint rising 30% over the last five years, locals are getting a taste of the downside of the real estate boom. “These neighborhoods are in such transition, and it’s a good thing,” said Gerald Esposito, district manager of CB 1. “We just don’t want to be victims of our own success.”

  1. Many of my “Art” friends clear more than $100,000 a year and my wife clears slightly over $200,000. They all work in the visual arts, not film, and are extremely motivated to succeed. They have never asked for handouts of any kind and you would truly be surprised how terribly gray the world would be with out them.

  2. 6:50 no one is equating money for art, here. You have to realize that as an artist the sacrifice you make is a low salary, which does not allow you to claim stake in any land. But, the silver lining here is that you can say you followed your dreams and art fulfills your soul. Great! You can live your hippy, trippy, idealist life, but you just can’t expect to be given free room and board; you must suck it up when rents rise, otherwise BUY!! These sacrificing, realistic ways are very much understand by the suit-wearing population. Artists need to get on board. Ignorance does not equal bliss.

  3. Anon 5:40,

I’m a social worker, so, yes, I do try to save the world. I think that funding for programs that help truly disadvantaged people are far more important than subsidizing loft dwellers (many of whom are college grads and could get professional jobs).

  4. Art is great, but when are artists going to stop being such idealists and realize that no one is going to hand them land because they feel they improved it. I mean, work a little harder, save up money, and buy in the dumpy areas, then you can’t complain when the cost of living goes up and you’re forced out b/c you’re paying close to nothing in rent. YOU MUST BUY, PEOPLE. Stop complaining. It won’t get you anywhere. Be smart. Put the paint-by-numbers book down for a minute and read some finance books. This is the way of the world. Oy.
