Adjacent to Flatbush Farm, sits, appropriately, the Flatbush Farm Bar(n). Like most successful bars, Bar(n) is darkly decorated and dimmly lit. Dusty relics strewn about — a pitchfork here, a stack of embroidery hoops there — create an effect that is enticingly gothic without being twee. Heavy wood tables in the back can seat larger groups, and there are plenty of shadowy, candle-lit nooks for more quiet conversations. High above the wainscoting hang two enormous chalkboards with the beer and wine lists. Beer drinkers will be more than happy with a selection of five brews and one cider on tap ($5-$8), as well as 14 premium bottles ($5-$12) and $3 cans of High Life. Happy hour, weekdays from 5-8pm, gets you $2 off well drinks, beer, and wine — a great opportunity to indulge in some of the pricier organic selections…

17limoncello.jpgAn absolute must-try, though, is Bar(n)’s homemade limoncello. It holds court at the end of bar in an enormous glass apothecary jar, pale rinds floating about in lemony vodka. This stuff will knock you out. If you’re feeling bold, sip it straight up; otherwise, order their delicious pear martini, which tempers the limoncello with a splash of pear cider. Among the other specialty cocktails (most $8) are the popular Mo’ Stomy, a classic ginger-and-rum punched up with fresh ginger juice and mint leaves, and the old-timey gin fizzy.

Of course, the nice thing about being at Bar(n) is that Farm is right next door, and a well-thought bar menu from the same kitchen is available until 1am. (You can also order from the restaurant menu until 11pm.) A bowl of sweet and spicy almonds or salty olives ($4) will keep your mouth occupied between drinks, and heartier fare like tempura onion rings ($6), warm artichoke dip ($8), deviled eggs ($6), or a burger and fries ($11) will warm up this cozy spot even more.

Speaking of cozy, Bar(n) will be hosting their first Winterfest this Sunday, Janunary 21, from 12-6. Sixpoint beers and winter spirits will accompany roasty Farm food like grilled oysters, sausages, venison, and cured meats. The event cost is not yet determined, but with weekend temperatures predicted for the low thirties, you can’t put a price on a warm belly. — Katy A

  1. Here’s a tip, Limoncello is really easy to make. Soak the zest of 20 or so lemons in 1 bottle grain alcohol for about 2 weeks. (You can use vodka but you’ll have to use less water or the stuff will freeze.) Then add an equal part simple syrup (sugar water) to the alcohol. Let sit for another week or as long as you feel like waiting.
    Presto! Serve chilled.
