To have your body bobbing in the East River is generally considered a fate to avoid, but the equation changes when there’s kayaking involved. And that’s what you’ll find today and every Thursday and Saturday at Brooklyn Bridge Park until the end of August — and it’s free and beginner-friendly.

It’s a walk-up deal, first-come first-served, and odds are good you’ll have to wait. When your time comes you’ll be outfitted with a single or double kayak and a life preserver, given a few basic pointers, and set loose on the water.

That doesn’t mean you can head for Governors Island — there’s a prescribed space you need to stay within, and a 20-minute time limit. But it’s a great opportunity to experience the Brooklyn waterfront in a new way.

All ages are welcome, though children under 18 need to have a guardian present. It’s not unlikely you’ll get wet, so dress with that in mind.

The kayaks are located in the park between Piers 1 and 2. Hours are Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — the line shuts down an hour before closing time. For more info, click here.
