Someone many of you know as babs took the time this week to send us some photos of a walking tour of Prospect Lefferts Gardens she recently took. Here are some highlights”

“The block of Parkside Avenue between Bedford and Flatbush has some of the most amazing townhouses I’ve ever seen,” writes babs. “I don’t know anything about their history but would love to learn.” So would we!

At Bedford and Clarkson, a vacant lot bound for Fedders glory.

On Hawthorne between Rogers and Bedford is a depressing juxtaposition. At 191 Hawthorne, the original woodframe construction remains intact, albeit somewhat weathered, while 195 Hawthorne is the victim of an extreme brick makeover.

On Clarkson off Bedford, babs came across this house only partially butchered by brick facade ad aluminum windows. Maybe they could sell the big-screen television to raise funds to restore that porch to its former glory.

  1. The photo I have of Lincoln Road was taken before 1908. It shows one side of Lincoln Road lined with woodframe Victorian houses. The other side is just parkland or empty lots. No construction. I’m confused…

  2. The name is actually a combination of Prospect Park, the original Lefferts homestead, and the Botanic Gardens. Don’t know how long the name has been used, but it pre-dates the historic district (1979); the PLGNA was formed in 1968. There’s a lot of info out there, but check out this link for a nice (albeit somewhat dated?) overview of the nabe: http://web.honorscollege.cuny.edu/student-projects/2005/neighborhoods/17/home.htm

  3. I looked back at my map of Vanderveer Park (now defunct) and it did swing down into PLG. I have a picture of Lincoln Road that shows it was once lined Victorian Wood frame houses. These wood frames are no doubt part of the larger Victorian building boom in Flatbush.
