One of the biggest names in the history of American soccer is undergoing a revival, and that second life is unfolding here in Brooklyn.

The Cosmos will move this spring from Hempstead, N.Y., to Coney Island. They’ll play 16 regular season games here a year as part of the North American Soccer League, the second highest level of soccer in the country. They’ll play at MCU Park, Coney Island’s baseball stadium owned by the New York Mets, also home to baseball team Brooklyn Cyclones.

The New York Cosmos were founded in 1970, folded in 1985, and were revived in their current iteration in 2010. In the late 1970s, they gained international renown by adding soccer legend Pelé to their roster, attracting tens of thousands of fans to games at Giants Stadium across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

Since 2010, the Cosmos have played on Long Island on the campus of Hofstra University. The move marks the first permanent home for professional soccer in Brooklyn. The Cosmos played their first game in Brooklyn at MCU Park in May of 2015.

The Cosmos will open their first season in Brooklyn on April 1 at 7 p.m. against Miami FC. For more information on the team or to buy tickets to the game, click here.
