Performance Art Hits Wall at LIC’s Chocolate Factory Next Week

    by

Michal Samama is a performance artist who creates body-based pieces incorporating movement, sound, objects, text, installation, and site-specific practices. She works alone. She puts her body on the line. She intentionally creates obstacles on stage that expose her to the possibility of failure.

In short, she’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The Israel-born artist is also getting ready to do her thing at The Chocolate Factory Theatre in Long Island City. Info on her four upcoming shows and more eye-popping photos are on the jump page.

On October 1st, Samama opens Background Materials, a performance event consisting of two separate pieces: Walling, where the main material is a concrete wall; and Lament of Plastic, where the focus is on a plastic trash bag.

Walling features slow, constant, counterclockwise movement along a wall and a floor. Samama’s naked body gets distorted between the vertical and the horizontal while she explores her space. Lament of Plastic mimics a child discovering an unfamiliar object. As Samama gets her groove on, the plastic bag is repeatedly inflated with air and deflated, losing and regaining its breath.

Details: Michal Samama: Background Materials, The Chocolate Factory Theatre, 5-49 49th Avenue, LIC, October 1st through October 4th, 8 pm, $15.
