It’s hard to think of a more highly-anticipated restaurant event in Brooklyn this year than today’s opening of Pies ‘n’ Thighs. We stopped by over the weekend and got a look at the new dining room (and peered in the window of the rear dining room set up in an old garage with shiny red doors.) The line for the Southern-style food is bound to be out the door, so get there early. To whet your appetite, TimeOutNY had some close-ups of some of the dishes on it food blog on Thursday, including fried chicken, hush puppies, mac and cheese and baked beans.GMAP

  1. I wasn’t so impressed. The black eyed peas were served ice cold? They called it “bean salad” when we asked if they were supposed to be cold. Wasn’t listed as “bean salad” on the menu? I’m from New Orleans and never ever heard of a ice cold side of black eyed peas. There was a line of people pinned between our table and the wall watching me eat. It made me just a little uncomfortable. I guess theres enough customers who believe the hype to keep this place open.

  2. I’m from North Carolina and was raised on fried chicken. Theirs is the best I’ve ever had. The mac and cheese, cheese grits and pulled pork are also outstanding. I’ll be there tomorrow.

  3. mopar – brooklyn star (which i go to for brunch at least 2x per month), had a fire! don’t know the status of the re-opening.

hopefully it’s all ok – they were doing gangbuster biz.

i will miss the grits the most, but surprisingly, dumont has pretty great grits at their brunch (also, good homemade soup, french toast, oatmeal, eggs and bacon). not saying that you should eat all of that together.

  4. East New York: Try Brooklyn Star. Very distinguished. Recommend the trout and the brussel sprouts and the cornbread with bacon, if they have it. That’s plenty for two people, the portions are enormous. Wine is annoying — waaaay too small and expensive.
