TreesNY (an environmental and urban forestry nonprofit organization) is at it again, and this time the focus is fruit trees. Did you know you can request a fruit tree here in NYC? It’s true, and the tree is free through the FruiTrees New York program.

The organization is planting fruit trees in Queens and the other four boroughs, and in order to get one in your community, all you have to do is ask for one. And not only do they have conventional sized trees, but they can also provide small fruit trees, dwarf fruit trees, and espalier fruit trees (these are trees that, through pruning, grow flat against a wall or fence).

Fruit trees can be planted at a school, a community garden, or other public space. After you submit your request for a tree, it will take about two weeks to get back to you. There’s a good chance you may see more fruit trees growing throughout New York City.

And on the subject of fruit trees in NYC, check out how the apple orchard is doing at Queens College, too (these trees were planted thanks to another program, the Newtown Pippin Restoration–Gotham Orchards initiative), full of heirloom apples like the Newtown Pippin, which was originally cultivated in Queens.

  2. I live in Brooklyn with plenty of property in my yard and live next door to a community garden. I would like to have two fruit trees for my backyard and community garden. Not a berry tree. Apple, Pear, Lemon would be nice because they grow small, not messy and have to be harvested moderately.
