Terrace on the park

The operators of Terrace on the Park, the catering hall inside the futuristic-looking former helipad in Flushing Meadows Corona Park want to renew their lease on the space. The current lease on the building, which was designed for the 1964-65 World’s Fair, expires in March and the parks department has issued a new request for proposals. George Makkos, co-owner of the the catering hall that currently operates in the space, says that his business has put $12 million into the hall but that the 100,000 square foot building needs millions more in improvements. He told the Queens Courier, “We’re trying to extend the lease for a new term so we can spend what’s needed and a lot more to bring the building to a state which is sufficient so it can compete in the wedding and corporate banquet business as it should.” The parks department said that anyone including the current tenants can submit a proposal but it is a competitive bidding process. It’s worth taking a look at the interiors as they are not quite what you would think given the building’s design.

  1. When I walked by this, my first thought is that it was … uh… kind of “ghetto”. But my parents tell me that’s where everyone had their weddings in the 1950s and 60s, and were surprised to hear it had fallen into disarray. But after looking at the website, it seems my first impression was incorrect. It actually looks quite nice. Not my style, but still nice.
