Windmill Tap & Grill and more in the QNYC Evening Edition for Thursday December 13, 2012

We visited the Windmill Tap & Grill and can’t wait for the opening

On Tuesday, we met with Paul Cohen, one of the partners behind the Windmill Tap & Grill, a new tavern that will open in the new year in Dutch Kills; he showed us around the space as it stands now. Things are still under construction inside, but the outside looks beautiful. A new door and lighting fixtures are on their way, too, which will make the building look even snazzier. Look forward to great drink (NY beer and wine at the least) and food (“global grandmother food” – aka comfort food, yum) in a great atmosphere in 2013.

Citi Bike, you’re breaking our heart – same for you, too, Sandy

We learned that Citi Bike, the bike sharing program starting up in NYC, has been delayed to May 2013. And LIC isn’t going to be looped in until the end of 2013. Blame it on Hurricane Sandy, who flooded the offices in the Brooklyn Navy Yard – the rooms that stored the parts that involved electrical components were particularly badly hit. So, we’ll just have to be patient.

And then there’s 38-40 Crescent Street in Dutch Kills

We’ve heard rumblings about a new restaurant opening up on Crescent Street in Dutch Kills, and some Department of Buildings documentation points to that in the building at 38-40 Crescent. Unfortunately for the owners of the potential business, their plans got shot down by the DOB. But try, try again, we say, and we expect they’ll do just that. Adding another restaurant just off of 39th Avenue is a good idea, in part because of all the hotels in the are (which are said to have a 95% occupancy most of the time). We’ll keep an eye on this property.

    Sandy 40 Days Later

This video was filmed 40 days after Hurricane Sandy hit the Rockaways. It’s about 10 and a half minutes long and shows the state of the boardwalk (destroyed most places), the beach (lots of seagulls), mangled metal doors on boardwalk businesses, and the piles of debris. It has a sort of Vangelis soundtrack along with natural sounds of wind and water. It’s very grey down there (winter is coming), and the area looks like a place that time forgot. The Rockaways still need our help.

    Astoria’s MOMI honors Wolverine

Of course Hugh Jackman has had other roles, but it is his part as Wolverine (X-Men) that gained him world-wide stardom. He may further gain notoriety in his role as Jean Valjean in Les Mis, which will be out soon. Currently, he is the voice of the Easter Bunny in the animated film, Rise of the Guardians – the art from that film is the subject of an exhibition at the Museum, Art of the Rise of the Guardians. He was recently on 60 Minutes, too, which was a fascinating interview (here’s the video of that interview). As for his honor from the Museum of the Moving Image, it happened on Tuesday, December 11, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
