On Monday, Feb. 20 at 7:30, Bob Furman will speak on Brooklyn history at the Prospect Park YMCA, which is located on Ninth Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue in Park Slope. The talk will feature pictures from his book in progress “Before Brownstones and After”, and features the argument that cities rise and fall principally by transportation technologies. In the case of Brooklyn, the borough was made by steam ferries, canal boats, horse and rail cars, els, bridges and subways, but was undone in the Twentieth Century because trucks and cars became the preferred ways to move people, and especially, goods. The talk will be held in the Seventh Floor Community Room. Admission is free and the event is sponsored by the Prospect Park YMCA.
